My new Greek students reached a milestone the other day. They have learned their alphabet and are now able to put the letters into syllables and pronounce actual Greek words. They are beginning to build vocabulary and are learning meanings of the words. They will never be the same again. Soon, they will be able to put words into a sentence structure - growing ever closer toward becoming good exegetes who will be able to understand their Bibles better in an expanded light. Needless to say, we really celebrated that milestone! Right now, I hope you are thinking along with me about the milestones in your own life and celebrating every one. Do you remember when you learned to read? Reading changes lives! Do you remember graduating from high school, from college? Both very important milestones. Getting your first job? Getting married? Becoming a Christian? Have you had any milestones lately? If not, maybe it's time for some self-evaluation. What is a milestone? According to Webster, it's a stone or pillar set up to show the mileage to or from a specified place, or a significant or important event in history or the career of a person, or the human race, etc. I love traveling the Old National Road (Rt 40) because there are several milestones along the way. I try to stop and read every one. They are pieces of history. Our lives well- lived are pieces of history too. God's word makes it clear that Christians are to be in the constant process of maturing, always working towards spiritual milestones. Remember where it says to add to our faith, goodness (virtue), then knowledge -self control - perseverance - godliness- brotherly kindness - and love...all wonderful milestones. While you are building these milestones, build them high so that others can be guided by them on the road of life. |
