I have been harvesting lots of tomatoes and green peppers recently, so I can make stewed tomatoes to freeze. When the winds are frigid and the ground is white, I use these tomatoes in my soups and sauces and think of this time of year - the time of harvest. They warm my insides, and thinking of harvest warms my heart.
I like thinking about my garden. I even write poems about it! I also like thinking about the very first gardener, God. I like thinking that he planted a garden in the East called Eden. Eden means East. Its environment was perfect - no weeds to pull. My garden was full of weeds, especially thistles and were they ever painful to pull. But there's nothing quite like the rewards of pulling weeds. When they are pulled they no longer compete for nourishment and the plants grow and produce better.
From where did thistles come? Well we can go to Genesis 1-3 see that the earth, as well as man, woman, and serpent suffered consequences of sin. Now life is full of weeds and spiritual weeds, as well, choking our lives. Thanks, Adam and Eve! What a mess!
But thanks to God, he had a plan to clean up the Mess and it is called, Christ. Until Christ comes again, we will have to keep pulling our literal weeds and our spiritual ones with his help. The great gardener still cares for us. He sends the sunshine and the rain. I love them both for what they teach me through my garden. Meet me in the garden another day for a spiritual thought or two. |
